The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has issued specific codes for various types of cement manufactured in the country, which forms the basic guideline for the quality parameters to be adopted by the manufacturer. It is mandatory for the manufacturer to mdisplay the relevent IS code on the bag for easy identification of the type of cement in the bag. While bying cement always ensure that there are details on the bag. The relevent BIS codes for different types of cement are as given below :-

NS-Not Specified - CEMENT'S ROLE IN HOME CONSTRUCTION
Cement is the basic binding material in concrete mixes which consists cement, sand, stone aggregates and water. Cement motor consists of cement, sand and water. When mixed with water, cement and hardens by means of chemicals reactions.
Types of cement Applications Ordinary Portland Cement Grades-33,43,53** - Brickwork
- Plaster
- Concrete
- For Slab, beams, columns etc
- All types of general constructions
Blended Cement
Portland Pozzolana Cement
Portland Slag Cement- All types of building construcio works as mentioned above
- Blended cement offers better long term strength gain and durability of concrete
- Concrete made with blended cement exhibits better resistance to various attacks on concrete such as sulphate, chlorides, etc
** The gradation of cement as 33,43 and depends on its compressive strength at age of 3,7 and 28dats in MPa - READY MIX CONCRETE - GRADES OF CONCRETE
Classification Grade Applications Ordinary M10 PCC (Plain Cement Concrete) e.g. Levelling course, bedding for footing, concrete roads etc. M15 PCC e.g. Levelling course, bedding for footing, concrete roads etc. M20 RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete) e.g. Slabs, beams, columns, footing etc. (for mild exposure) Standard M25 RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete) e.g. Slabs, beams, columns, footing etc. M30 RCC e.g. Slabs, beams, columns, footing etc. M35 RCC e.g. Slabs, beams, columns, footing etc. M40 RCC e.g. Pre-stressed concrete, slabs, beams, columns, footing etc. M45 RCC e.g. Runways, Concrete Roads (PQC), Prestressed Concrete Girders, beams, RCC Columns M50 RCC e.g. Runways, Concrete Roads (PQC), Prestressed Concrete Girders, beams, RCC Columns M55 RCC e.g. Prestressed Concrete Girders & Piers High Strength M60-M80 RCC work where compressive strength is required such as high rise building, long span bridges, ultra-thin white topping etc and constructions in aggressive e.g. Spilways of dams coastal construction - DIFFERENT TYPES OF SPECIALITY CONCRETE
Brand Features Advantages Applications Fibrecon Produced by using different fibres like polyester, polypropylene glass, steel, etc. Prevents plastic shrinkage cracks in concrete in green stageIncrease in the homogeneity of concrete & arresting of segregation Impermeable & more durable since micro cracks are arrestedUsed in concrete roads & pavment overlays, thin RCC elements like staircases, slabs, flooring panels, etc. exposed to aggressive environmentFreeflow Produced by using high reactive sillica & latest 4th generation acrylic based super plasticizers & viscosity modifying agents leading to self compacting & free flowing concreteSaves time & resources as no compaction is required to be done Lends greater freedom is designing complicated & durable structureUsed to implement large size underground works like raft slabs, machine foundations, footings, etc. Heavily reinforced thin RCC sections RCC members with intricate & complicated shape & size, etc.Stainless Produced by using high quality corrosion inhibiting agents that provide a protective coating to the steel reinforcement and prevents corrosion of the steelAssured proction against corrosion of steel Improves durability and service life of the structureUsed in RCC structures in marine construction, jetties, dockyards, etc. Terrace slabs, toilet slabs Foundation for bridges across rivers & sea coasts. All underground RCC works Effluent & sewage treatment plants.Thermocon Produced by using chilled water/ice flakes & other ingrediants that bring down the temperature of concrete at the time of production and placingControls the internal temperature of concrete members & thermal tensile cracksUsed in mass concrete works with large diamension e.g. dams, bridges, piers, girders, raft slabs, pile foundations & pile caps, etc.Hypercon Optimal use of multiple blends of cementitious materials & 4th generation super plasticizers resulting in refinement of micro pore structure & very high strength developmentVery durable and long lasting structuresUsed in hi-tech structures like long span bridges, high rise towers, etc. Civil works in aggressive environment like marine works, etc.Colourcon Produced by using variety of high quality UV resistant pigments to meet innovative designs ofArchitectsHighly aesthetic & colourful designs are possible for elevational treatment in high end projects Various options can be explored by the Architects as per their vision on and imaginationUsed in innovative projects involving high end aesthetic designs & colourful elevations Walkways in gardens, apartments, car parks, amusement parks, shopping malls, etc. Pavements & textures flooring
